I’ve long had a love for things that light up in interesting ways, particularly if they’re time pieces too. Reckon it’s the old hippy in my wishing I lived in a word of groovy progressive tunes lit only by coloured oil projector lamps … tempered with something of a 70s vibe given my love of interesting light up digital stuff too, probably so I can tell the time in the darkness of my groovily lit world ;-).
As an aside I’m currently listening to some very suitable music by Pete Brown & Piblokto so the lights are right down in my study and I really need that oil projector on now!
Anyhow, I own a gorgeous Nixie clock for my living room, I’ve a collection of interesting watches including a lovely classic red LED one and several of Tokyoflash’s finest, and I owned several of Mathmos‘ classics, years before lava/glitter/fibre optic lamps were considered fashionable and hence were ten a penny!
I’ve decided however that this clock is a step too far in terms of unreadability despite it being a shiny colourful looking beast! However, if somebody would like to buy it for me for Xmas I’m sure I’ll give it a go ;-).
I’m not sure whether I should be impressed at the iPhone ingenuity, or instead feel driven to hunt the “band” down and punish them for defiling a Page/Plant classic!? Then again I’m probably one of the few mega-Zep fans who actually is rather tired of Stairway to Heaven, and even bought a Rolf Harris version for a bit of a change.
Now of course I’m not advocating illicit music downloading mkay … but ChrisGoesRock’s blog features a remarkable diversity of rare and unusual albums often from long deleted and forgotten bands. Peace!
So I’m totally addicted to music, and am always looking out for new bands to try out. With tastes that run from classic 60’s soul, rock of all types but particularly more prog and psychedelia, electronica, baggie, rap, dance and more, I’m kept busy! Also I love following the threads/relationships between bands, and for doing this my favourite tool is now allmusic.
This week I’ve been listening to a lot from a stoner rock band called Fu Manchu (and also a lot by Blue Oyster Cult as a contrast). How did I get to Fu Manchu? Well I’ve always been a big fan of Josh Homme and hence own lots of Queens of the Stone Age. That led to me owning various Desert Sessions (which are very, very hard to get on CD!), and also all the albums by Kyuss. Kyuss led to Fu Manchu. Next up I got to Monster Magnet, and then I happened upon Sleep. These guys were quite possibly the ultimate stoner band … but in a rather Spinal Tap way … so I just had to share their allmusic biography with you!
“After almost two years of writing and re-writing material for their next album (to be named Dopesmoker, not surprisingly) amidst abundant weed consumption, the trio finally delivered their long-awaited epic, now named Jerusalem, to London Records. But to their label’s surprise, Jerusalem comprised a single, 60-minute magnum opus to marijuana which the band refused to edit or split up into sections under any circumstances. A complete deadlock ensued, tying up both parties in red tape for another two years.
